How to Load Your Car at Flagstop Car Wash

A step-by-step guide to entering the tunnel with confidence, whether it's your first visit or your hundredth

Pulling into a car wash tunnel can feel uncertain, even if you have done it before. Where exactly do you stop? When do you shift to neutral? What do you do with the steering wheel? These are the questions guests ask most often, and they are good questions.

The loading process at Flagstop takes less than a minute, and once you know the three things our team member needs from you, the rest takes care of itself. We put together this guide, along with the video above, so you can see exactly what to expect before you arrive.

Before You Pull In

Two things to take care of before you reach the tunnel entrance:

Close all windows and your sunroof. This is the most common oversight. Water enters the tunnel fast, and there is no graceful way to roll a window up mid-wash.

Turn off your automatic windshield wipers if your vehicle has them. Auto-sensing wipers can activate inside the tunnel, and moving wiper blades can be damaged by wash equipment passing over them. Many newer vehicles have a dedicated car wash mode in settings that handles this. Check your owner's manual if you are unsure.

The Three Things the Loader Needs From You

Once you are at the entrance, a team member (called a loader) will guide you in. Your job comes down to three things.

Step 1: Watch the loader and follow their hand signals

Drive slowly toward the tunnel entrance with your attention on the loader ahead of you. They will use hand signals to guide your driver-side tires onto the conveyor track. If you need to adjust left or right, they will show you. If you are lined up correctly, they will signal you to stop. Follow their lead. Do not rush and do not guess. The loader does this every day and will get you positioned correctly.

Step 2: Shift into Neutral (N) when the loader signals you to stop

As soon as the loader signals you to stop, shift your vehicle into Neutral. Do not leave it in Drive and do not put it in Park. Neutral lets the conveyor belt take over and move your car through the tunnel at the right speed. If your vehicle has an electronic auto-hold feature or a one-pedal driving mode, turn those off before you enter, as they can prevent the car from rolling freely on the conveyor. Many newer vehicles have a car wash mode in the settings menu that disables these automatically.

Step 3: Take your hands off the wheel and your foot off the pedals, and leave them off

Once you are in Neutral, take your foot completely off the brake and gas, and remove your hands from the steering wheel. Keep them off for the entire wash. The conveyor moves your vehicle through the tunnel. You do not need to steer, accelerate, or brake at any point. Let the system do its job.

when to pull out

At the end of the tunnel, a sign will indicate when it is safe to leave. Wait for that signal before shifting back into Drive. Do not pull forward until you see it. Exiting too early can cause problems for equipment still moving behind your vehicle. Once the sign clears you, shift into Drive and pull forward slowly.

questions guests ask most

  • Do I stay in my car the whole time?

Yes. You remain in your vehicle through the entire tunnel wash. Once you exit and pull into a bay, you get out and use the self-service amenities at your own pace.

  • What if I have never done this before?

Our loader is there specifically to help you. Before you pull in, you can tell our team member at the entrance that it is your first time and they will walk you through it. The loader at the tunnel entrance will guide every movement with hand signals. You do not need to figure anything out on your own.

  • What if my vehicle has one-pedal driving or auto-hold?

Turn those features off before entering, or use your vehicle's car wash mode if it has one. These features can prevent the car from rolling freely on the conveyor, which can cause it to stop in the tunnel. Your owner's manual will have instructions for your specific model.

  • Is it safe for my vehicle?

Yes. Factory-installed antennas on most modern vehicles are designed to withstand automatic car washes. For added peace of mind, we recommend retracting or removing aftermarket antennas, roof racks, and loose accessories before entering the wash tunnel. If your vehicle has a spoiler, roof rack, crossbars, or trailer hitch, let team members at the entrance know when you arrive — they can confirm which services are appropriate and share anything helpful to know before you pull in.

  • What do I do if something feels wrong during the wash?

Every Flagstop tunnel has an emergency stop, and team members are monitoring throughout. If anything seems off, stay calm and stay in your vehicle. The team can stop the wash immediately. If you are not satisfied with any part of your visit, let a team member know before you leave.

  • What is the Unlimited Wash Club?

Flagstop's Unlimited Wash Club lets you wash as often as you want at any Flagstop location for one flat monthly fee, with no contract, cancel anytime. Your license plate is your membership card. The system reads it automatically when you pull in, so there is nothing to present or scan. Every member visit includes the Ultimate Wash, Flagstop's top tier.
