Express vs. Touchless vs. Full-Service Car Wash: What's the Difference?

Three very different car wash experiences, three different price points, three different results. Here is how to choose the right one for your vehicle and your time.

Express tunnel Fast, consistent, best for regular washing Flagstop
Touchless No surface contact, right for sensitive finishes
Full-service Interior and exterior, occasional deep clean

Quick answer

The Three Types of Car Washes Explained

An express car wash runs your vehicle through an automated soft-cloth tunnel in under five minutes. You stay in your car and all treatments are applied automatically. A touchless car wash uses only water pressure and chemicals with nothing physically contacting the paint. A full-service car wash includes staff who clean both the interior and exterior by hand, taking 30 to 60 minutes or more. While most Flagstop locations are express soft-cloth tunnels, Flagstop does operate one touchless car wash tunnel at its North Chesterfield 24-Hour location in Central Virginia. Our Capitol Landing location currently offers express exterior tunnel washes, with full-service interior cleaning available for $15 more.

Type 01

Express Tunnel Car Wash

What it is

Your vehicle moves through a fixed tunnel on a conveyor track while automated equipment washes it. You stay in your car the entire time. The tunnel applies soap, rinse water, protectants, wax, sealants, and tire treatments in sequence as your car moves through.

How long it takes

Three to five minutes in the tunnel. Total visit time including payment and self-service amenities is typically under fifteen minutes.

What it cleans

Exterior only. After the tunnel, most express washes, including all Flagstop locations, offer free self-service amenities for interior touch-ups: vacuums, mat cleaners, glass cleaner, and towels.

Best for

Regular maintenance washing. Most Virginia drivers should wash every one to two weeks. An express tunnel is the fastest, most consistent, most affordable way to stay on schedule.

Type 02

Touchless Car Wash

What it is

High-pressure water jets and chemical solutions clean your vehicle with nothing physically contacting the paint. Equipment moves around a stationary vehicle or the vehicle passes through a touchless tunnel where only water and chemicals reach the surface.

The limitation

Because nothing physically contacts the paint, touchless washes cannot remove stubborn road grime, brake dust, and baked-on contaminants the way soft-cloth systems do. After a Virginia winter of road salt exposure or several weeks of pollen season, a touchless wash may leave behind residue that a soft-cloth system removes completely.

Best for

Vehicles with aftermarket vinyl wraps, fresh custom paint jobs, or other surface treatments where physical contact is a concern. Also appropriate for vehicles with minor loose trim that could catch on soft-cloth equipment.

Type 03

Full-Service Car Wash

What it is

Staff hand-clean both the interior and exterior of your vehicle. The car typically goes through an automated exterior wash tunnel first, then staff vacuum the interior, wipe down surfaces, and hand-dry the exterior.

How long it takes

30 minutes to over an hour depending on the level of service and how busy the facility is.

What it costs

$35–$80+ typical for a basic full-service wash, with more for add-ons

Significantly more than express or touchless. At Capitol Landing, interior cleaning is $15 on top of your express exterior wash.

Best for

Occasional deep cleaning when the interior needs professional attention beyond what self-service amenities address. Good for after a long road trip, after kids or pets have created significant mess, or for a seasonal reset. If you're near Williamsburg, Capitol Landing gives you a fast exterior wash and an interior cleaning in one stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an express car wash and a full-service car wash?

An express car wash runs your vehicle through an automated tunnel for exterior cleaning. You stay in your car. A full-service car wash includes staff who clean both the interior and exterior by hand, taking significantly longer and costing more. Flagstop is an express car wash.

What is a touchless car wash?

A touchless car wash uses only water pressure and chemical solutions. Nothing physically contacts the paint. Touchless washes often leave behind stubborn grime that soft-cloth systems remove. Flagstop uses a soft-cloth system for a more thorough clean.

Is a soft-cloth car wash better than touchless?

For most vehicles, yes. Soft-cloth physically removes road grime, brake dust, and caked-on contaminants that water pressure alone cannot. Flagstop's soft-cloth tunnel with nanolayer protection delivers a deeper clean while remaining safe for modern paint finishes.

What is an in-bay automatic car wash?

An in-bay automatic keeps your vehicle stationary while equipment moves around it. Most Flagstop locations use conveyorized express tunnels instead: your car rides along a track while fixed equipment washes it, which gives consistent results and moves more cars through faster.

Two Flagstop locations have in-bay automatic washes:

Iron Gate 24-Hour – 6479 Iron Bridge Road, Richmond, VA 23234
Chester 24-Hour – 2500 West Hundred Road, Chester, VA 23831

Which type of car wash is best for my vehicle?

For most Virginia drivers, an express soft-cloth tunnel like Flagstop offers the best combination of cleaning power, safety, speed, and cost. Touchless is better for vehicles with aftermarket wraps or fresh custom paint. Full-service is useful for occasional deep interior cleaning.
